Mike Pence announces he will return to live in Indiana...?

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Former Vice President Mike Pence concluded his four years in President Donald Trump’s administration with a farewell address in his hometown and a promise that he was moving back to the state this upcoming summer.

“Back Home Again in Indiana” played over the speaker shortly before Pence walked up to the podium to speak to more than 60 supporters at the airport in Columbus, Ind. The podium was adorned with the words “Back home again," and a large American flag hung behind Pence.

"I've already promised Karen will be moving back to Indiana come this summer." Pence said, offering no details about where in Indiana they might land. "There's no place like home."

Pence congratulated President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, before thanking Trump.

“Let me also take a moment to thank President Trump and Melania for all they’ve done to make America great,” said Pence as his two daughters, son and wife stood next to him. “I will always be grateful for the opportunity that they gave us to serve and the way they allowed us to make a difference in the life of this nation.”

Pence, who was more emotional than usual, then proceeded to thank his staff, his family and God during the 15 minute speech. At times he appeared to hold back tears, his voice cracking. He listed each one of his children by name and their accolades and said they are his biggest accomplishment in life.

“While we don't know what the future holds," Pence said, "we know who holds the future. I'm absolutely confident that the best days, for this one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all, are yet to come.”

More than 60 family members, politicians and Columbus residents attended the farewell speech at the Columbus airport, including GOP Chair Kyle Hupfer, Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch and his brother, Congressman Greg Pence.

Pence flew in immediately after attending President Joe Biden’s inauguration that morning. Harris and her husband escorted Pence and his wife, Karen Pence, as they departed the Capitol in a post inauguration tradition. They could be seen laughing together.

Trump did not attend the inauguration, breaking a long-held U.S. custom.

Pence was seen as a loyal No. 2 to Trump for most of their four-year tenure. Trump, though, was displeased after Pence refused to block the certification of electoral votes for Biden after the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

Trump had harsh words for the vice president on Twitter, though the two reportedly spoke the next week at the White House.

Pence did not watch Trump depart Washington on Wednesday.

During Trump’s farewell speech that morning, Trump briefly thanked Pence for his service. “I want to thank our vice president, Mike Pence and Karen,” Trump said near the end of about 10 minutes of comments before he got on plane Wednesday morning to fly to Florida.

Folks in Columbus had more to say.

“Thank you for the honor that my brother has brought to the state of Indiana, to Columbus, to his name and his family's name,” Greg Pence said in a prayer. “Thank you for sending him to our country to our state, and now back to our home.”

Likewise Hupfer said Hoosiers have "watched proudly" as Pence directed the nation's coronavirus response.

Karen Pence held back tears as she talked about her husband, and at one point during her speech leaned in to kiss him. She told the crowd about the tradition for a special guest to sit in the jump seat in the cockpit as a guest. On this day, she said her husband sat there.

"This is the exact same plane that took us to Washington, and Mike wanted to sit in the jump seat," Karen Pence said. "He wanted to take it all in. He wanted to get that clear perspective. Landing here back home again in Indiana, in Columbus, Indiana, he got that perspective."
